Second Zwe Lespwar Sesel 2016 - Praslin dominates volleyball, Anse Royale best in athletics |19 April 2016
Praslin male and female secondary school teams were too strong for their opponents in volleyball as they triumphed in the finals yesterday, while Anse Royale athletes brought their domination to Stad Linite on Sunday, winning nine gold medals.
Volleyball
The young boys and girls of Praslin secondary did their school proud yesterday as they won the respective finals to send their schoolmates in a frenzy of celebration in front of large crowd at the Palais des Sports.
On the girls’ side, Praslin’s final opponents were neighbours and rivals La Digue and much was expected of the two teams.
It was not to be a close affair however as Praslin dominated the first set during which their opponents gifted them way too many easy points through individual errors.
Praslin, meanwhile, was working the passes and attacking the ball, showing off the potential to be ‘champions for tomorrow’ as the game’s theme song suggests. They won the first set 25-13.
The second set was more of the same, with Praslin dominating from the off and when they took a 20-15 lead, their opponents just lost the will to play on and took things too easy, allowing them to grab the second set win on a 25-18 score. The bronze medal winner of this tournament was English River School.
The boys’ final pitted a Praslin side consisting of very tall players against the shorter boys from English River. But that didn’t stop English River from giving Praslin a scare in the first set.
It was Praslin who took the initiative early and they kept the momentum going, where they took an 18-14 lead. However, their opponents staged a fantastic fightback to equalise at 25 apiece. English River’s effort would be in vain though as Praslin managed to just take the set on a 27-25 score.
The second set saw Praslin take complete control, leading 5-0 and they never looked back as they won the set 25-12 to a complete a double for Praslin.
The bronze medal went to Pointe Larue.
