Barclays withdraws local football sponsorship |12 May 2016

After being the main sponsor for almost 10 years and its name associated with Seychelles’ football, Barclays Bank Seychelles is no longer the official sponsor of the first, second, third and inner island leagues.

This information was communicated to Sports Nation yesterday and according to a communiqué from the Seychelles Football Federation (SFF), the decision takes effect immediately, meaning that the name of Barclays will no longer be linked with Seychelles’ football leagues.

“We received a letter from Barclays last week informing us that they will no longer be sponsoring our leagues and thus we will have to find a new partner,” said SFF secretary general Jemmy Adela.

The withdrawal is due to the reduction in shareholding in the Barclays Africa Group Limited (BAGL) and thus it is for economic reason that they will no longer be investing in sponsorships.

Mr Adela said while they are in the process of looking for a new main sponsor for the football leagues, it will now be known simply as the SFF division one, two, three and inner island leagues, until a new sponsor is found.

It would be 10 years since Barclays began sponsoring Seychelles football and before that the main sponsor of the league was the Seychelles Marketing Board (SMB) now Seychelles Trading Company (STC).

Barclays is also withdrawing its sponsorship of one of their biggest assets, which is the popular Barclays Premier League, which will simply be known as The Premier League as of next season.
