Letter to the Editor-Jimmy Freud, Sigmund’s other brother: ‘Slips’, and opposition ‘politics’ to anything and everything! |04 August 2016

Many well read persons may not know that the respected Sigmund Freud, a neurologist who is credited with psychoanalysis, a clinical approach between patients and the psychoanalyst, had a much younger brother who had a less glorious life than Sigmund.

That younger brother, Jerome, aka Jimmy Freud,  can be credited however as I understand it with a version of the  ‘Freudian slip’ and the less respected ‘Jimmying’, as in ‘Jimmying’  the car or house door to  break in and steal.

Noting this and Jimmy’s reported nefarious activities, that of breaking into things, and giving the police the ‘slip’, gave rise in a round-about way to the more famous and now accepted and proper ‘Freudian Slip’, when linked to Doctor Sigmund Freud who took up this clever saying, tagging it to a ‘parapraxis’, meaning, “an error of speech or thought,” a slip of the tongue and of the pen.

And what of it?  Am I at this time slipping at the pen or worse still, becoming unhinged as political campaigns take a firm grip on us all?  Perhaps but more likely, not!

Opposition leaders standing under an umbrella today ladies and gentlemen, citizens of this 3rd Republic, will have you believe that playing of songs such as ‘Annou Viv Konman Frer’, long linked to the Democratic Party of years past and who wanted at its core a unity approach to government, or saying that the next assembly will work for ‘you’, or that all past Seychelles political leaders have failed, or who totally ignore others with a difference of opinion, because of a difference of opinion, or who say they want to ‘balance’ the parliament, have in essence exposed themselves early on to what they all are truly about.  And that is division, more division, followed by some confusion, so as to win!

The ‘devil’ truly is in the detail and just as I opened with a story of Jerome Freud, better known as ‘Jimmy’, the details of all those many leaders who today stand under one big umbrella tagging themselves with three letters of the alphabet, need to be scrutinised and clearly understood, even as they bring their supporters to a rabid frenzy.

In a nutshell good citizens, the LSD or LDS leadership, or whatever they want to call themselves represents the very best of what Jerome Freud was.  And since ‘Jimmy’ or ‘Jerome’  was just an invention of the mind, and that you perhaps believed it for just a second or two, should give rise to you thinking seriously about a group who attempt as well to spin a story of Seychelles today in our 3rd Republic as they picture it in their minds.

On the one hand they say it’s not all good, and on the other profit much on what is good about us all and what we have here today. Our votes after-all have enabled past parliaments to work on our behalf.  We have achieved precisely because we know who is a ‘Jimmy’ and who is not.  We simply cannot permit them to ‘Jimmy’ their way to a parliament, recalling at one point one of them who wanted to defecate on another while in the assembly.  No slip of the pen here my friends!  Simple fact.
