Four records tumble at school swimming champs

This year, only four records were written in the annals of the Sacos School Swimming championships. Adam Moncherry from the International School Seychelles (ISS), Sofija Gelev from ISS and the 4x50m freestyle boys 14-15 years from Independent school were the swimmers able to break records in the competition finals held last Friday at the national swimming pool, Roche Caiman.

The greatest achievement came from Moncherry who managed to erase a 22-year-old record belonging to Kenny Roberts since 1994. In the male 50m butterfly 16 years and over event, Moncherry who was given a stiff challenge by Dean Hoffman from FASD, clocked 26.18 seconds to erase the 22-year-old record of 26.84 seconds.

Moncherry also set a new record of 24.57 seconds in the 50m freestyle, as he beat record holder Hoffman and erased his record of 25.43 seconds set earlier this year.

In the 25m female freestyle, Gelev managed to beat her own record of 17.47 seconds to establish a new record of 16.69 seconds.

In the 4x50m freestyle 14-15 years final, Independent school led from start to finish way ahead of second placed Plaisance to set a new record of 2:02.27, erasing the old record of 2:02.69 set in 2013 by ISS.

Independent, International and Plaisance schools were the winners of the inter school swimming championship sponsored by Sacos. Independent School won five titles, International School took three and Plaisance had two, in the different categories for boys and girls from 7 to 16 years and over.

Competitions in the Olympic size 50m pool were competitors from 12 to over 16 years and the 7-9 years and 10-11 years had theirs in the 25m Olympic size pool.

50m freestyle 14-15 years: 1^st Amy Andre (Plaisance)-30.75 seconds, 2^nd Rebekah Payet (Independent)- 32.19 seconds, 3^rd Charlotte Passon (ISS)-34.56 seconds. (Record (2014)- Felicity Passon 27.50 seconds)

50m freestyle 16 years & over: 1^st  Martina Ceccato (Independent)- 30.63 seconds, 2^nd Anisha Payet (SBSA)-31.38 seconds, 3^rd Anya Rigamonti (ISS)- 33.95 seconds. (Record (2016)-Anisha Payet-30.26 seconds).
