Boxing African championship postponed |23 May 2017
The African Boxing Championship slated for May 27 to June 4 in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, has been postponed.
The Seychelles Boxing Federation learned that the championship has been postponed through a communiqué issued on Saturday May 20, 2017 by the African Boxing Confederation (AFBC) president Kelani Bayor.
Mr Bayor wrote that following the special joint mission of inspection of AFBC and Aiba (International Boxing Association) from May 16-18, 2017 in Brazzaville and the commitment of the Congolese government signed on May 17, 2017, the Congolese authorities have wished to postpone the African Boxing Championship.
The AFBC has confirmed that the new date of June 17-25, 2017 has been discussed and harmonised for the success of the event, in conjunction with the Congolese Boxing Federation.
Seychelles was to send two boxers ‒ Kitson Julie and Keddy Agnes ‒ to this year’s championship.
Comeback kid Julie and Agnes have for some time now been preparing for the championship which will serve as qualifier for the 2017 World Boxing Championship in Hamburg, Germany.
Julie is the only Seychellois fighter to have won a gold medal at the championship and he achieved the feat in the light welterweight (64-kg) category 2004 in Gaborone, Botswana. The win earned him automatic qualification for the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, but he lost 22-51 to Iranian-born Australian Anoushirvan Nourian in his first fight.
