Nicholas Barra has received a certificate of appreciation for saving two drowning American citizens and three more people.
The certificate was given to him by US Chargé d'Affaires, Dr Melanie Zimmerman this week.
The certificate reads: "For saving the lives of two American citizens, who were dragged out to sea by a strong current while swimming in the south of Mahé. Responding to calls for help, Mr Barra risked his own life by venturing out in rough seas to bring life preserver rings to the swimmers and guide them to shore. Witnesses say Mr Barra’s efforts saved a total of five lives that day. On behalf of the government of the United States, we express our heartfelt gratitude."
The Chargé d'Affaires also gave Mr Barra a challenge coin, which he was very touched to receive.
